Mental Health Glossary
Anxiety Disorder
A condition characterized by excessive worry, fear, or nervousness that can interfere with daily activities. It encompasses various disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A structured, time-limited psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours, aiming to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies.

Depression
A mood disorder marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. It can affect one's thoughts, behaviour, feelings, and physical health.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
A form of therapy that combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness strategies. It is particularly effective for individuals with emotion regulation issues and self-destructive behaviours.

Eating Disorders
Mental health conditions characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behaviours and related distressing thoughts and emotions. Common types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.

Emotional Regulation

Mental Health

A mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

Psychotherapy
A treatment method for mental health issues that involves talking with a trained therapist. It can help individuals understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours, and develop coping strategies.

Resilience
The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; mental toughness. It involves adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.

Self-Esteem
An individual's subjective evaluation of their own worth. It encompasses beliefs about oneself (e.g., "I am competent") and emotional states such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame.

Trauma
An emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, or natural disaster. While trauma is a normal reaction to abnormal events, it can have lasting effects on mental health.

Wellness
An active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. It is more than being free from illness; it is a dynamic process of change and growth.
